This is a trail covering the northern side of Kyoto, starting from Ninna-ji, 仁和寺. Take buses 205 0r 206, or rent bicycles to get to the first pit stop. This trail brings you up to the northern most part where you visit the Golden Temple, 金閣寺 which is literally the “Temple of the Golden Pavilion”.

This historic Buddhist temple featuring picturesque gardens & a 5-story pagoda was founded in 886.

4 Nijō Castle (4.8km from Kinkaku-ji)

Allow at least 1 hour here.

Built in 1603, this cyprus-wood castle with extensive gardens was a home for the shogun Ieyasu.

5 minutes by car (or 30 minutes by foot)

5 Kyoto Imperial Palace (2.5km from Nijō Castle)

Traditional Japanese palace complex open to visitors on just 5 open days or by prior arrangement.
